Mount Meru

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, rising to an altitude of 4,566 meters above sea level. It is located approximately 20 kilometers east of Arusha town, within Arusha National Park.

Often overshadowed by Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers a rewarding trekking experience with dramatic landscapes, rich wildlife, and fewer crowds. It is widely regarded as one of the most scenic mountains in East Africa.

Landscape and Natural Features

Mount Meru is an active stratovolcano with a striking crater and steep inner cliffs. The mountain features diverse terrain, including open grasslands, dense forest, rocky ridges, and alpine zones.

As you ascend, views open toward Mount Kilimanjaro, the Meru crater floor, and the surrounding plains of Arusha National Park. The scenery changes rapidly, making the trek visually engaging from start to finish.

Wildlife Experience

One of the defining features of Mount Meru is the presence of wildlife along the trekking route. Because the mountain lies entirely within a national park, trekkers are escorted by armed park rangers during the lower sections.

It is common to encounter wildlife such as buffalo, giraffe, warthog, zebra, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. This makes Mount Meru one of the few high-altitude treks in Africa that also offers a walking safari experience.

Trekking and Acclimatization

Mount Meru has a single established route to the summit. While it can be climbed in three days, a four-day trek is strongly recommended to allow proper acclimatization and a more comfortable ascent.

Due to its altitude and trekking profile, Mount Meru is commonly used as an acclimatization climb before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro. It helps trekkers adapt to altitude while gaining confidence and mountain experience.

Birdlife and Scenic Highlights

The Momella and Ngurdoto Lakes, located within Arusha National Park, are rich in birdlife. Flamingos, pelicans, and many other species are often seen during the trek.

These scenic highlights add another dimension to the Mount Meru experience, combining mountain trekking with nature observation.
