11 Days Southern Tanzania Safari

Duration

11 days

Overview

The 11-day Southern Tanzania Safari explores some of the country’s most remote and wildlife-rich regions. This journey focuses on wide open landscapes, lower visitor density, and diverse safari activities beyond standard game drives. Southern Tanzania offers a more secluded safari environment compared to the northern circuit, with vast wilderness areas and strong conservation presence.

The safari begins and ends in Dar es Salaam, with travel into the southern parks by scheduled flights and road transfers. The itinerary includes time in Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park, two of Tanzania’s largest and most ecologically significant protected areas.

Ruaha National Park is known for its dramatic landscapes of baobab trees, granite boulders, and the Great Ruaha River. The park supports large elephant populations and strong predator numbers, including lions, leopards, and wild dogs. Walking safaris are a highlight here, offering close-up interpretation of tracks, plants, and wildlife behavior under professional guidance.

The Usangu Wetlands region adds a seasonal ecosystem element, with birdlife and remote plains supporting specialized conservation research and low-impact tourism. This area offers a sense of isolation rarely found elsewhere.

Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, provides a different safari perspective with river systems, oxbow lakes, and boating safaris. Hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and diverse birdlife are commonly seen along the waterways. The combination of game drives, walking safaris, and boat excursions creates a varied and well-balanced experience.

After a welcome rest and a delicious breakfast, we will transfer you to the airport for your flight to Ruaha National Park. Enjoy aerial views of the beautiful landscapes before you arrive at the airstrip. A guide will welcome you and you will depart to the camp on a game drive transfer.

As you drive, learn about this only recently explored region in the south of the park, and the research that has been done to learn more about the biodiverse it holds.

Usangu Expedition Camp is your base for explorations, tucked into the woodland. With just six comfortable guest tents, the camp offers an exclusive experience in this largely unexplored wetland. Simple in its design, the focus sits firmly on the exploratory nature of the experience, with meals prepared over the open fire and enjoyed beneath the dazzling African stars.

Game drive in search of herds of sable and roan antelope, watch elephant along the shore during a boat safari, and walk the expansive grasslands during the dry season. Sleep out in a star cube under the enormous canopy of the African night sky for a true adventure. Night drives with thermal cameras offer a unique perspective, watching predators on the prowl and using the latest technology to complement your safari experience.

  • Transfer to Kokoko Camp

After breakfast and saying your goodbyes to your Usangu hosts, you will game drive north through the park. Ruaha National Park is renowned for its remarkable sightings of large predators and is home to lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog, hyena and much more. This reserve is one of the most well-preserved and untouched wilderness areas on the entire continent.

Encounter the true feeling of the wild at Kokoko Camp, an expedition-style tented camp located in the prime wildlife area of the park on the banks of the dry Mwagusi river. The camp, booked privately for up to six guests, offers an exceptionally intimate safari experience hosted by one of Asilia’s top guides. The days unfold at the pace you choose, on exploratory walking safaris to uncover this rugged landscape, or venturing further afield on game drives. Afternoon drives and sundowners extend into night-time excursions to witness the secrets of the bush and spot the shy and often rare nocturnal animals. Perfect days end with stargazing and dinners prepared in the riverbed, surrounded by flickering lantern lights and the sounds of the surrounding wildlife.

The camp is simple in style, with just three tents, each en suite with outdoor shower and a custom-designed retractable roof to provide shade during the day and open for stargazing at night.

With vast, expansive landscapes, home to towering ancient baobabs and dense forests, Kokoko Camp provides an exceptional safari adventure that will leave you in awe of the magic of Africa’s wilderness and wildlife.

  • Fly to Nyerere National Park, Southeastern Tanzania

Upon your arrival at the local airstrip, you will be greeted by a guide who will transfer you to the camp.

Roho ya Selous is situated on a small peninsula overlooking Lake Nzerakera in the heart of Nyerere National Park.  This reserve is the largest in Africa and home to one of the continent’s most significant populations of wild dog. In addition, there are plentiful hippo, elephant, buffalo, hyena, giraffe and more than 400 bird species.

Relax and unwind in the open-sided, canvas-roofed dining or lounge areas accompanied by a wildlife book or favourite novel and observe the wildlife surrounding the lake. You can also take a refreshing afternoon dip in the pool. Enjoy an afternoon tea break before setting out onto the lake for a boating safari, watching hippo and crocodile at close quarters and, at sunset, sipping on a delicious G&T or other beverage of choice. In the evening, gather around the crackling campfire with fellow guests to share stories about your day’s experiences before enjoying a delicious dinner surrounded by the sounds of the bush.

Roho ya Selous offers a comfortable stay with eight stretch canvas tents offering en suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor hot showers, flush toilets, and an over-bed “evening breeze” cooling system. The name Roho ya Selous means “heart of the Selous”, and that’s exactly where the camp is located. The camp provides seasoned travellers with an authentic safari experience by balancing adventure and comfort.

  • Flight to Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam.

After a final delicious breakfast in camp and after saying your fond farewells, you will be transferred to the airstrip to connect with your flight to Dar es Salaam and onwards home.
