6 Days Serengeti Great Migration Safari

Duration

4 days

Overview

The 6 Days Serengeti Great Migration Safari is designed to follow one of the most spectacular wildlife events in the world. Every year millions of wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, move across the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. This continuous movement forms the famous Great Migration, a natural cycle that supports the entire ecosystem.

This safari combines migration tracking in the Serengeti with visits to Lake Manyara National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. The journey moves through a variety of landscapes including Rift Valley escarpments, acacia woodlands, volcanic plains, and open savannah that supports some of the highest wildlife densities in Africa.

During the migration season the massive herds attract predators such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and crocodiles. Depending on the time of year, travelers may witness calving season in the southern plains or dramatic river crossings in the northern Serengeti.

Travel takes place in a private 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced professional guide who tracks wildlife movements and explains the Serengeti ecosystem.

Safari Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha or Moshi to Lake Manyara National Park

Your safari begins with a morning departure from Arusha or Moshi toward Lake Manyara National Park, located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

Lake Manyara is known for its diverse habitats including groundwater forests, acacia woodlands, and the alkaline lake itself which attracts large numbers of flamingos and other bird species. The park also supports elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, and buffalo.

The area is also famous for its tree climbing lions which are sometimes seen resting on acacia branches.

After a full game drive and picnic lunch in the park, continue to the Karatu area for dinner and overnight at your accommodation.

Day 2

Karatu to Central Serengeti National Park

After breakfast depart Karatu and travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward Serengeti National Park.

The route passes near the Ngorongoro Crater rim and continues across scenic highland landscapes before descending into the Serengeti plains. The dramatic transition from forested highlands to open savannah marks the beginning of one of Africa’s most famous wildlife regions.

A picnic lunch is taken during the journey before continuing with a game drive across the central Serengeti. This region supports large predator populations including lions, cheetahs, and leopards.

Dinner and overnight take place at your accommodation in the Serengeti.

Day 3

Central Serengeti to Northern Serengeti

Following breakfast, travel north through the Serengeti ecosystem toward the northern circuit where migration herds gather during the river crossing season.

The northern Serengeti is known for the Mara River, where large herds of wildebeest attempt to cross while crocodiles wait below the surface. This region also supports strong populations of lions, elephants, giraffes, and numerous bird species.

Game drives continue throughout the day while searching for migration activity and other wildlife.

Dinner and overnight at your accommodation in the northern Serengeti.

Day 4

Northern Serengeti Game Drive

Today is dedicated to exploring the Mara River region in search of the Great Migration.

Game drives focus on areas where wildebeest gather along the riverbanks before attempting to cross. These crossings can be dramatic wildlife events as thousands of animals attempt the journey while predators remain nearby.

The surrounding landscapes also offer excellent wildlife viewing including lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and many bird species.

After a full day of wildlife exploration, return to your lodge or camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 5

Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

After breakfast enjoy a final morning game drive in the Serengeti before beginning the journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The route passes through scenic landscapes and wildlife areas before reaching the Ngorongoro highlands. Optional visits to a Maasai village or Olduvai Gorge can be arranged during the journey.

Arrival at the Ngorongoro Crater rim provides spectacular views across the volcanic caldera.

Dinner and overnight take place at your accommodation near the crater.

Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha or Moshi

After breakfast descend approximately 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater for a wildlife viewing experience inside one of Africa’s most unique ecosystems.

The crater floor supports a dense concentration of wildlife including buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, elephants, and predators such as lions and hyenas. The area is also one of the best locations in Tanzania to observe the endangered black rhinoceros.

After the game drive and picnic lunch on the crater floor, the safari concludes with the return journey to Arusha or Moshi.
