Lake Chala Day Trip from Moshi
Duration
Overview
Lake Chala is a deep volcanic caldera lake formed over 250,000 years ago, located near the Kenya–Tanzania border, approximately 55 km from Moshi. Fed by underground streams from Mount Kilimanjaro, Lake Chala is considered the deepest inland lake in Tanzania.
Surrounded by steep crater walls and ancient rock formations, the lake is rich in natural beauty, history, and local legends. It remains a peaceful destination away from busy tourist routes, offering a strong sense of isolation and connection with nature.
Depending on the season and light conditions, the lake’s color shifts between deep blue, turquoise, and green, creating striking visual contrasts against the crater walls and surrounding forest.
Nature, Wildlife, and Scenery
Lake Chala supports a diverse ecosystem with plant species unique to the area. The surrounding forest is home to over 200 recorded bird species, including birds of prey, making it an excellent destination for bird enthusiasts.
Wildlife commonly seen around the crater includes:
-
Colobus monkeys
-
Blue monkeys
-
Baboons
-
Dik-dik and kudu
-
Monitor lizards and pythons
Occasionally, migrating elephants may pass through the surrounding area. The setting offers excellent photographic opportunities, especially on clear days when Mount Kilimanjaro is visible in the background.
Optional Activities at Lake Chala
After or instead of the bush walk, you may choose from several relaxed activities:
-
Canoeing: A calm one-hour paddle on the lake, offering a unique perspective of the crater walls
-
Fishing: Extended fishing time may be arranged. Lake Chala tilapia is present, with catch-and-release practiced due to conservation efforts
-
Swimming: Swimming is possible near the shoreline. Strong swimmers should still exercise caution due to the lake’s steep drop-offs
Lunch can be enjoyed at the Lake Chala lodge, offering scenic views of the lake and Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.
In the late afternoon, you return to Moshi for your next planned activity.
