4 Days Mount Meru
Duration
Overview
Mount Meru is located approximately 20 kilometers east of Arusha town, within Arusha National Park. Standing at 4,566 meters above sea level, it is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and offers a rewarding high-altitude trekking experience.
Mount Meru is frequently used as an acclimatization climb before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro, due to its elevation profile and shorter duration. While the mountain has a single established route to the summit, a longer itinerary is recommended to allow better altitude adaptation.
Landscape and Wildlife Experience
Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru trekking takes place entirely within a national park and requires climbers to be accompanied by armed park rangers. This creates a unique walking safari experience during the lower sections of the trek.
Trekkers may encounter wildlife such as African buffalo, zebras, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. The route also passes near Momella and Ngurdoto Lakes, which are known for rich birdlife, including flamingos and pelicans.
Route Profile and Acclimatization
Mount Meru can technically be climbed in three days, but a four-day trek is strongly recommended. The additional time supports better acclimatization and improves overall comfort and safety at altitude.
The mountain has less permanent snow cover compared to Kilimanjaro, as it is an older volcanic structure.
