Is Yellow Fever Vaccination Required for Tanzania?

✔️ Yellow Fever Vaccine is Required if:

You are arriving in Tanzania from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission, or if you have transited for more than 12 hours in such a country.

Common examples include:

  • Kenya
  • Uganda
  • Ethiopia
  • Rwanda
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Any other Yellow Fever risk country

In these cases, you must present a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate at immigration.

❌ Yellow Fever Vaccine is NOT Required if:

You are traveling directly to Tanzania from:

  • Europe
  • North America
  • Asia
  • Australia
  • Middle East

and have not transited through a Yellow Fever risk country for more than 12 hours.

What About Zanzibar?

Zanzibar follows the same Yellow Fever regulations as mainland Tanzania. Requirements are based on your previous travel history, not whether you land in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.

Transit Rules Explained Clearly

You will be asked for a Yellow Fever certificate if:

  • You transit more than 12 hours in an airport of a Yellow Fever risk country
  • You leave the airport during transit in a risk country

You will usually not be asked for the certificate if:

  • Transit is less than 12 hours
  • You remain inside the airport

Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate

If required, the certificate must:

  • Be issued at least 10 days before arrival
  • Be recorded in the official International Certificate of Vaccination (Yellow Card)
  • Be valid for life (no booster required under current WHO guidelines)

Who Is Exempt?

Some travelers may be exempt, including:

  • Infants under 1 year
  • Travelers with medical contraindications (doctor’s certificate required)

Always carry supporting documentation if exempt.

Important Practical Advice

  • Airlines may check Yellow Fever requirements before boarding, not just at immigration
  • Immigration officers can deny entry or require vaccination at the airport if documents are missing
  • Rules can be enforced strictly, even if your risk is low

Strong Recommendation

Even if not required, some travelers choose to get vaccinated if:

  • Visiting multiple African countries
  • Planning future travel within Africa

Always consult a travel clinic or healthcare provider before making this decision.

Quick Summary

  • Tanzania does not require Yellow Fever vaccination for all travelers
  • Requirement depends on previous country visited or transit
  • Coming directly from non-risk countries . No vaccine required
